Usoro, Brume and Ochonogor made history on Tuesday, August 6, by becoming the first Nigerian trio to reach an Olympic final in an individual event at the Paris 2024 Olympics
In the first round, Usoro set the pace with a huge foul near the 7-meter mark. Brume jumped 6.44 meters, while Ochonogor, in her first major championship, managed 6.29 meters.
In the second round, Usoro jumped 6.68 meters to take the lead. Inspired by Usoro, Ochonogor soared to 6.65 meters in her group, moving into second place.
Brume struggled, only jumping 6.40 meters in the second round. With one attempt left, she needed to hit 6.75 meters to qualify.
Drawing on her experience, Brume jumped 6.76 meters on her final attempt, securing her spot in the final.
Both Usoro and Ochonogor’s jumps were also good enough to advance to the final.
The last time Nigeria had more than one athlete in an Olympic Athletics final was in 1996 when Falilat Ogunkoya and Fatimat Yusuf made the women’s 400m final in Atlanta.
KanyiDaily had also reported that Nigerian sprinter, Favour Ofili made it to the final of the women’s 200m event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
