Police Fire Tear Gas, Shots At Protesters, Journalists In Abuja [Video]

The protest against economic hardship at Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja ended abruptly on Saturday when security agents fired at protesters and journalists.

It was gathered that the security agents used tear gas to try to disperse the crowd on Saturday afternoon.

The later began shooting at people nearby, damaging the rear glass and denting the bumper of a Premium Times reporter’s vehicle.

The security forces had demanded that the protesters stay inside the stadium, a directive the protesters had rejected since the demonstrations began on August 1.

Before the situation escalated, the deputy commissioner of police in charge of operations, Ishaku Ishaku addressed the protesters.

He denied that his men had used tear gas on Thursday and Friday.

Ishaku said, “The court order is very clear. The court has confined protesters to the premises of the Moshood Abiola Stadium.

“If they are law abiding, they should obey the court order. Well, we have not tear-gassed anybody within the premises of the national stadium.”

The protesters disagreed with his claim and continued to demonstrate outside the stadium with their placards.

Shortly after Ishaku left, a combined team of police and military personnel started firing shots at protesters and journalists.
