Tyla Beats Burna Boy, Ayra Starr, Others To Win Best Afrobeats Award At MTV EMAs 2024

South African singer Tyla has reached a new milestone in her music career by winning the Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards.

The 30th edition of the MTV EMAs took place on Sunday, November 10, at the Co-op Arena, celebrating top artists, breakthrough talents, and the global diversity of music.

In the Best Afrobeats category, Tyla triumphed over Nigerian stars such as Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Ayra Starr, securing the award for the Nigerian music genre.

In addition to her Best Afrobeats win, Tyla also took home the Best R&B and Best African Act awards during the ceremony.

While accepting her award, Tyla brought her sister, Sydney Seethal, on stage.

“If you guys don’t know (her), this is my sister, Sydney (Seethal),” Tyla told the cheering crowd.

Oh my gosh, guys – I can’t believe it. Literally, all the nominees, they are insane, they literally have taken Afrobeats so far. And I’m so honoured to be winning this award, you know, like it’s insane. But I just want to thank my team.

“I want to thank my family, the Tygers for voting for me. Thank you to God, obviously. You know Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music.”

Turning to her sister, Tyla smiled as Sydney said, “Girl, I’m proud of you!”

This comes two months after Tyla won her first MTV Video Music Award (VMA) and used the opportunity to highlight the diversity of African music.
