Davido, Burna Boy, Tems, Other Nigerian Superstars Loses All Nominations At 66th Grammy Awards

Nigerian music stars, Davido, Burna Boy, Olamide, Tems, Asake, and Ayra Starr faced disappointment at the 2024 Grammy Awards as they lost in all categories they were nominated for.

South African sensation Tyla emerged victorious on Sunday, clinching the Grammy for “Best African Music Performance.”

Her international smash hit, “Water,” outshone contenders like Davido’s “Unavailable” and Burna Boy’s “City Boy”, securing the prestigious accolade.

The chart-topping success of “Water” extended across 16 countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States.

Tyla’s triumph marked a significant achievement, as her single not only achieved global acclaim but demonstrated enduring appeal across diverse audiences.

Davido, receiving his first Grammy nomination, contended in three categories: ‘Best Global Album’ for “Timeless,” ‘Best African Performance’ for “Unavailable,” and ‘Best Global Music Performance’ for “Feel.”

However, he fell short in each category, with the latter being won by “Pashto” by Béla Fleck, Edgar Meyer & Zakir Hussain Featuring Rakesh Chaurasia, and ‘Best Global Album’ claimed by Shakti’s ‘The Moment.’

Burna Boy, despite securing four nominations and performing at the prestigious event, faced disappointment across the board.

“City Boys,” one of Burna Boy’s nominations, was surpassed by J Cole’s “All My Life” featuring Lil Durk.

His other nominations included ‘Sittin’ On Top of The World’ for Best Melodic Rap, ‘I Told Them’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Alone’ for Best Global Music Performance.

Burna Boy holds the distinction of being the first African artist to receive a Grammy nomination for five consecutive years (2019-2023).

Ayra Starr was nominated for her hit ‘Rush’, on her debut studio album “19 & Dangerous”.

Tems was nominated in the Best song written for Visual Media Category for her work on the song, ‘Lift Me Up’, which is a soundtrack for the film, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’’.

Olamide and Asake bag nomination for their hit song ‘Amapiano’.

The Best African Music Performance category was introduced as one of three new categories at the 2024 Grammy Awards, alongside Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording, won by Kylie Minogue.

The award ceremony took place at the Peacock Theater in LA at 15:30.
