A renowned figure in professional wrestling and the uncle of WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, Misterio Sr. began his career in 1976. He officially retired from wrestling in 2009, leaving behind a legacy in the lucha libre world.
Mexican wrestling organization Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide shared the sad news on social media, stating:
“We regret the sensitive death of Miguel Ángel López Días, known as Rey Mysterio Sr. We send our most sincere condolences to his loved ones and raise our prayers to heaven for his eternal rest.”
Born in Tijuana, Mexico, in 1955, Misterio Sr. initially pursued boxing before transitioning to professional wrestling, where he became a legendary masked luchador.
His death comes only weeks after another loss in the family—Rey Mysterio’s father, Robert Gutierrez, passed away at 76.
Rey Mysterio, now 50, paid a touching tribute to his father, writing: “Father: thank you for giving me the life I have.
“You did more than set the example of how to love & maintain a strong marriage and father 4 boys, you were the example and passed every single time until your death with flying colours.
“Excellent husband, loving father, beautiful grandfather, incredible son & brother, and amazing father in law.”
Rey Mysterio remains active in WWE and recently faced a setback when he was unmasked during a match.
Earlier this year, he held the United States Championship, which he eventually lost to Logan Paul at the Crown Jewel event.
