Brazil Announces Nigeria’s Inclusion As BRICS Partner Country

Brazil has confirmed Nigeria’s inclusion as a partner country in the BRICS alliance.

Brazil made this known in a statement released by its Foreign Ministry on Friday, January 17, 2025.

This development positions Nigeria as the ninth partner country within BRICS, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

In the statement, Brazil acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance, saying: “The Brazilian government welcomes the Nigerian government’s decision.

“With the world’s sixth-largest population—and Africa’s largest—as well as being one of the continent’s major economies, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS.

“It plays an active role in strengthening South-South cooperation and in reforming global governance—issues that are top priorities during Brazil’s current presidency.”

BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, has been expanding its network as more nations express interest in joining the group of leading emerging economies.

The “partner-country” category was first introduced at the 16th BRICS Summit held in Kazan in October 2024.

Reports from the summit suggested that Nigeria had already been accepted into this category at the time.

Eche Abu-Obe, a former spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also highlighted Nigeria’s entry into the alliance as a significant achievement.

With this development, Nigeria joins eight other partner countries across Latin America, Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, solidifying its role in the global economic landscape.

KanyiDaily recalls that  Donald Trump recently warned the BRICS nations that they will face a 100% tariff if they attempt to replace the US dollar.
