The inauguration took place on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at Independence Square in Accra, the nation’s capital.
John Mahama takes over from Nana Akufo-Addo, who succeeded him in 2017.
During the event, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang also made history as she was sworn in as Ghana’s first female vice president.
The oath of office for both leaders was administered by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
Mahama’s return to the presidency follows his victory in the December elections, where he campaigned on a promise to revitalize Ghana’s struggling economy.
Representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), he secured 50% of the vote, defeating Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) by a significant margin of 1.7 million votes.
Bawumia, who was then the vice president, quickly conceded defeat, stating at a press conference, “The people of Ghana have spoken, the people have voted for change at this time and we respect it with all humility.”
John Mahama later confirmed receiving a congratulatory call from his opponent via his X account.
This marks Mahama’s return to leadership after his first tenure as president from 2012 to 2016.
