“Obasa is the speaker. I’ve resumed, and I remain the Speaker of the Assembly,” the impeached speaker told reporters on Thursday at the Lagos Assembly Complex.
When asked if he had been reinstated, Obasa insisted that he was never officially removed, stressing that impeachment is a democratic process but emphasized that due process must be followed.
Obasa said, “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional but in doing that, you must follow the due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.”
However, lawmakers loyal to Mojisola Meranda, who represents Apapa Constituency I, have rejected Obasa’s claim, maintaining that Meranda remains the Speaker.
On Thursday, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly Complex, accompanied by heavily armed security operatives. This was his first public appearance at the House since his controversial removal on January 13, 2025.
Outside the complex, his supporters gathered in large numbers, chanting in his favor as he made his way into the building.
Meanwhile, the political tension escalated further with the withdrawal of security details assigned to Speaker Meranda, reportedly on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
An aide to Meranda confirmed that both police and SSS officers assigned to her were withdrawn, leaving her vulnerable amid the ongoing power struggle.
KanyiDaily recalls that Mudashiru Obasa was removed from office in January after more than two-thirds of the lawmakers voted him out over allegations of misconduct.
Following his removal, his deputy, Mojisola Meranda, was sworn in as Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in the South-West region.
