Mustapha is the son of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the NDC.
The development was confirmed on Monday by Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, in a brief statement.
He said, “HE Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo unveiled Hon Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as running mate for the 2027 Governorship Election.”
Saifullahi Hassan, media aide to Rabiu Kwankwaso, also announced the development in a separate post on X.
He wrote, “Congratulations!!! H.E. Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, as NDC deputy gubernatorial candidate.”
Before joining the NDC ticket, both Gwarzo and Mustapha served in the administration of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.
Gwarzo was the deputy governor, while Mustapha held the position of commissioner for youth and sports.
However, both men later resigned from the state government following disagreements and a worsening relationship between Rabiu Kwankwaso and Governor Yusuf.
On May 3, Kwankwaso joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress alongside former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi after leaving the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
About a month later, Gwarzo also dumped the ADC for the NDC and was subsequently announced as the party’s governorship candidate on May 29.
The choice of Mustapha as Gwarzo’s running mate is expected to strengthen the party’s position as preparations for the 2027 Kano governorship election gather momentum.
