Boko Haram Attacks Military Base In Borno, Kills Two Teachers

Suspected Boko Haram fighters launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army base in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State early Monday morning.

According to local and security sources, the assault targeted the Forward Operating Base of the 153 Task Force Battalion around 3 a.m.

While exact details are still unclear, reports suggest that some soldiers may have been killed in the raid.

One source revealed that the attackers destroyed military tanks and stole weapons and ammunition before fleeing the scene.

The terrorists also burnt down armoured tanks and made away with arms and ammunition from the base,” said the source.

In a separate incident the same day, two education workers were killed by a landmine explosion in Damboa Local Government Area.

The victims were traveling along the Maiduguri–Damboa–Biu road when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED) believed to have been planted by Boko Haram.

Sources said the victims, both classroom teachers, were on their way to Maiduguri to take the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) exam scheduled for later in the week.

Their car, which was carrying mangoes, ran over the explosive, turning what should have been a routine journey into a tragedy.

The teachers were identified as Blessing Luka of Junior Day New School, Damboa, and Bitaleaf Gedion of Junior Day Secondary School (UBE) Islamiya, Damboa.

The incident has deeply affected the local education community.

The source said, “The tragic loss of two dedicated staff members of the Damboa Educational Local Authority is very worrisome.

“They lost their lives in an improvised explosive device explosion along the Damboa to Maiduguri highway on May 12, 2025, after a Toyota vehicle, which conveyed them with fresh mango fruit heading to Maiduguri, ran over the planted landmines.

“This heartbreaking incident occurred as they were traveling to Maiduguri to sit for the TRCN examination scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2025.

“What was meant to be a journey of professional advancement turned into a devastating tragedy that has shaken the entire community.

“Blessing Luka served at Junior Day New School in Damboa, while Bitaleaf Gedion served at Junior Day Secondary School (UBE) Islamiya, Damboa.

“Their untimely deaths are not only a great loss to the educational sector in Damboa but also a stark reminder of the ongoing insecurity that continues to affect our region,” the source lamented.

The District Head of Damboa, Alhaji Zanna Lawan Maina, confirmed the tragic news and urged residents to continue praying for lasting peace in Borno and across Nigeria.

Responding to the renewed violence, Senator Ali Ndume, who represents the area, criticized the Federal Government and security agencies for their slow response.

Ndume emphasized the urgent need to properly train, equip, and motivate the military to face these ongoing threats.

He said, “Let me reiterate that the military must be trained, equipped, armed, and motivated to enable them to defeat the renewed attacks.”

These incidents happened just hours after a high-level emergency security meeting in Maiduguri, where officials discussed rising insecurity in Borno, including attacks, kidnappings, and illegal movements of goods and people.

KanyiDaily recalls that Boko Haram terrorists attacked Izge community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, killing an army captain and a soldier.
