The 33-year-old was sentenced in February 2024 to six years in prison—without being present—for helping to smuggle over a tonne of cocaine into the Netherlands through Antwerp.
Quincy Promes also has a previous conviction for stabbing his nephew during a family event in 2020.
Not long after that incident, he transferred from Ajax to Spartak Moscow in a deal worth €8.5 million.
Both legal cases are currently under appeal.
Earlier this week, Promes said in an interview that he was willing to return to the Netherlands to attend his appeal hearings, as long as he wouldn’t be taken into custody.
The footballer put in a formal request, but it was denied by the Amsterdam court of appeal.
The Dutch public prosecutor declined to give details about the arrest.
However, they earlier stated that the extradition process was “at an advanced stage” and “progress is being made”.
Promes, who played 50 matches for the Netherlands national team, most recently played for Dubai United FC.
The Telegraaf noted that he is now a free agent.
His lawyer confirmed the arrest but refused to make any further comments, the newspaper added.
KanyiDaily also reported how 18-year-old Chinese footballer, Guo Jiaxuan died after suffering a severe head injury during a training session in Spain.
