NNPCL Spokesperson Olufemi Soneye Resigns

Olufemi Soneye has resigned from his role as the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

He made the announcement on Saturday via a Facebook post, where he expressed gratitude to his colleagues and said his decision was driven by the need to focus more on family and personal commitments.

Olufemi Soneye wrote, “I wish to inform you that I have stepped aside from my role as Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd.

“This decision will allow me to devote more time to my family and attend to personal responsibilities that now require my closer presence.”

Reflecting on his time at NNPCL, Soneye described it as a privilege, saying he was proud to be part of the company’s transformation journey.

He thanked the management for the opportunity and pledged to continue supporting the company from outside.

“It has been a profound honour to serve both the Company and our country, and to contribute in my own way to the ongoing transformation of NNPC Ltd.

“I am deeply grateful for the trust reposed in me, the opportunities granted, and the incredible professionals both within and outside the organisation with whom I have worked.

“I remain a steadfast supporter and ambassador of NNPC Ltd wherever I go. I enjoin you, dear colleagues, to continue your robust, balanced, and constructive reportage to support the Company’s noble mission and strategic role in Nigeria’s energy future. With sincere appreciation,” the post concluded.

Olufemi Soneye was appointed to the role in October 2023, replacing Garba Muhammad, who had taken on the position in August 2021 during a company-wide restructuring.

Before joining NNPCL, Soneye had a long career in journalism across Nigeria, the U.S., and Australia. He served as Editor of “Air Force One Magazine” in Washington, D.C., and was President of the Nigerian Media Practitioners in the U.S. capital.

He is affiliated with several professional groups, including the Nigerian Union of Journalists, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Association of Black Journalists, and the Guild of Corporate Online Media Publishers.

In recognition of his work, Olufemi Soneye was named “Spokesperson of the Year” in both 2024 and 2025 by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.

This comes weeks after President Bola Tinubu inaugurated the board and executive management team of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
