Tension gripped Balogun Market on Lagos Island on Tuesday after a violent clash between Yoruba and Igbo traders left one person dead and others unaccounted for.

Eyewitnesses said the crisis began with a fight between two traders who are respectively Yoruba and Igbo.

The altercation quickly escalated, with both men using weapons. The Yoruba trader was reportedly stabbed and later died from his injuries.

The incident sparked retaliation, as groups of Yoruba youths stormed parts of the market, chasing Igbo traders and attacking people.

As I speak to you now, many of our Igbo brothers are missing. The entire market is not safe. Yoruba boys have taken over, and we fear for our lives,” the source said.

Sources confirmed that the Igbo trader accused of the stabbing has been arrested and taken to the Lion Building Police Command for questioning.

Meanwhile, several shop owners, including a popular hair vendor known as Hairlord, appealed to the Lagos State Government and security agencies to step in quickly to restore calm and prevent the violence from spreading.

Efforts to reach the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful at the tile of filing this report.

Meanwhile, Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched an investigation into the killing of 45-year-old Udeme Uko, who was found dead while sleeping with his family inside a church in Ukanafun Local Government Area.
