His death was confirmed on Wednesday by journalist and film producer Seun Oloketuyi, who announced in a social media post that the actor died in the morning.
“Things Fall Apart actor, Fabian Adibie, is dead. Died 2:30 am this morning,” Oloketuyi wrote.
The actor, who marked his 81st birthday in December 2024, is best remembered for his role in the television classic Things Fall Apart.
Before his rise in Nollywood, Fabian Adibe represented Nigeria at the country’s first Commonwealth Arts Festival in 1965.
He later began his acting journey in 1987 with the television adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, where he brought the character Ogbuefi Uzowulu to life alongside industry greats like Pete Edochie.
His calm presence, coupled with his commanding performances, earned him a special place in the hearts of audiences and cemented his reputation as one of the pioneers of Nigeria’s film industry.
Since news of his passing broke, colleagues and fans have been paying tribute, celebrating his remarkable contributions to Nollywood and describing him as a cultural icon whose legacy will endure.
KanyiDaily recalls that Fabian Adibe previously narrated how he was jailed for 30 months after joining Biafran forces during the Nigerian civil war in 1967.
