Man Burns Ex-Girlfriend In Ibadan Military Barracks Over Relationship Oath Dispute

A man Lawal Faruq has been arrested for allegedly setting his former girlfriend, Omolola Hassan, on fire at the Mami Market inside Odogbo Military Barracks in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident, which took place late Tuesday evening, stemmed from a dispute over a relationship oath after Hassan ended their relationship.

It was gathered that the violent act shocked both residents and members of the military community.

According to eyewitnesses, Faruq confronted Hassan at the busy market, which serves both soldiers and civilians.

In a fit of rage, he allegedly poured petrol on the woman and set her ablaze while shouting about a promise they had made to each other.

He poured fuel on her and struck a match, screaming about a promise they made,” said a trader who requested anonymity.

Hassan was reportedly doused with petrol and set on fire by the suspect who claimed both had sworn an oath never to part ways.

Soldiers and traders at the market quickly intervened, extinguishing the flames before rushing the victim to Yawiri Hospital in Akobo.

Medical personnel described her condition as critical but stable, with severe burns covering much of her body.

She’s a fighter, but the next 48 hours are crucial,” a hospital worker told reporters.

Faruq was immediately arrested and is being held by military police at Odogbo Barracks for questioning.

Security officials said investigations point to a personal dispute, with the suspect claiming that he and the victim had taken a traditional oath never to separate.

He kept saying she broke their bond, that they were tied by something sacred” a source said, adding that investigators are verifying the claim.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident, noting that a joint investigation with the military is underway.

This is a heinous act, and we will ensure justice is served,” said the state police spokesperson, SP Adewale Osifeso, who also urged residents to remain calm as the investigation continues.

KanyiDaily recalls that a 27-year-old man identified as Joel Okongo was dragged to court for allegedly chopping his ex-girlfriend’s hand after she rejected his love advances.
