Heavy security was deployed on Monday at the PDP national headquarters in Abuja when Mohammed resumed his role.
Before heading to the party’s headquarters, Mohammed met with his supporters at the PDP office in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where he confirmed that he had taken over the leadership role.
Abdulrahman Mohammed’s appointment followed a decision by the Samuel Anyanwu-led National Working Committee (NWC), which declared him Acting National Chairman after suspending the party’s National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba.
The development marks a new twist in the PDP’s deepening leadership crisis.
Over the weekend, Damagum and his allies in the NWC suspended National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organizing Secretary Umar Bature, and several other key officials.
In response, Anyanwu led another faction of the NWC to announce the suspension of Damagum, Ologunagba, and four other top officers, intensifying the internal feud within the opposition party.
When Abdulrahman Mohammed, backed by the Anyanwu faction, arrived at the PDP national secretariat to assume office, Damagum and members of his loyal camp were notably absent.
Addressing journalists at the party headquarters, Mohammed reaffirmed his position as Acting National Chairman, calling for calm and unity within the PDP as efforts continue to resolve the leadership crisis.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Federal High Court in Abuja had stopped the PDP from holding its planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, which was scheduled for November 15 and 16.
