Police Declares Omoyele Sowore Wanted For ‘Public Disturbance’ In Lagos

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has declared human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, wanted for allegedly inciting public unrest in the state.

Speaking during a press briefing at the Oworonshoki community on Monday, Jimoh accused Sowore of visiting Lagos to stir up protests over the recent demolition of houses carried out by the state government.

Earlier in the day, police officers fired tear gas to disperse residents who were protesting against the demolitions. Several protesters were reportedly injured, while others were arrested during the demonstration.

Addressing journalists, Jimoh confirmed that 13 protesters had been taken into custody, stressing that there was no justification for the protest since the Lagos Government had already provided compensation to those affected.

The Lagos CP further alleged that Sowore had planned to block traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge as part of the protest, describing the act as a serious offense intended to cause hardship to Lagos residents.

“He (Sowore) should report at the nearest police station. I, as the commissioner of police (for) Lagos State Police Command, declare Sowore wanted for the act of causing disturbance of public peace,” he said.

“I declare him wanted for the act of causing disturbance of public peace and act to commit serious felony by planning to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland bridge to cause hardship for Lagosians and other Nigerians.

“We are closing in on him. We learnt he is doing video (in a car) and he couldn’t come down. Let him come down (from the car). He came down in Abuja. Why is he afraid in Lagos?”

KanyiDaily recalls that Omoyele Sowore had announced plans for a protest amid growing outrage from residents of Oworonshoki, who were left homeless after a midnight demolition allegedly carried out by the Lagos Government.
