Barau FC player Nana Abraham is recovering after he and club official Jabir Hassan were attacked during a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match against Katsina United on Saturday at the Muhammad Dikko Stadium.
The incident occurred shortly after Barau FC equalized in the 69th minute through Orji Kalu, sparking violence among some home fans. Security officials were forced to temporarily halt the match for nearly ten minutes while players, staff, and injured supporters were treated and order was restored.
Nana Abraham sustained a visible neck wound in the attack, while several other team officials and supporters also required medical attention. The Barau FC medical team, led by Sani Idris, provided immediate care.
Speaking to the club’s media department on Sunday, Abraham said he is feeling better.
“Thank God I am feeling better right now. Actually, our medical team did their best in treating my injuries,” he said.
He expressed frustration over the attack, adding:
“It’s unfortunate what happened. Football is not a war, you can either win, draw, or lose. We’ve played five home games, won one, drawn three, and lost one, nothing happened. So why should we be attacked here?”
After the intervention of security officials, the match resumed and ended in a 1–1 draw.
The attack highlights ongoing concerns about fan violence and stadium security in Nigerian football. NPFL officials and Barau FC have yet to announce any disciplinary measures, but the incident has reignited calls for stricter protections for players, staff, and spectators.
