Tinubu Faults Trump’s Designation Of Nigeria As ‘Country Of Particular Concern’

President Bola Tinubu has rejected the recent claim by U.S. President Donald Trump that Christians are being subjected to “mass slaughter” in Nigeria, saying such statements misrepresent the country’s true situation.

KanyiDaily recalls that Trump had announced on Friday that Nigeria was being designated as a “Country of Particular Concern” due to alleged killings of Christians.

The US president said Christianity was under threat, blaming “radical Islamists” for widespread violence against Christians.

The United States cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” Trump wrote, adding that he had instructed two U.S. lawmakers, Riley Moore and Tom Cole, to investigate the issue.

Reacting to the statement on Saturday, President Tinubu dismissed Trump’s remarks as inaccurate and misleading.

In a statement he personally signed, Tinubu said Nigeria remains a democratic nation that values religious freedom and peaceful coexistence among all faiths.

He noted that since taking office in 2023, his administration has worked closely with leaders of both Christian and Muslim communities while addressing security issues that affect Nigerians across different regions and faiths.

The statement read: “Nigeria stands firmly as a democracy governed by constitutional guarantees of religious liberty.

“Since 2023, our administration has maintained an open and active engagement with Christian and Muslim leaders alike and continues to address security challenges which affect citizens across faiths and regions.

“The characterisation of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not reflect our national reality, nor does it take into consideration the consistent and sincere efforts of the government to safeguard freedom of religion and beliefs for all Nigerians.

“Religious freedom and tolerance have been a core tenet of our collective identity and shall always remain so. Nigeria opposes religious persecution and does not encourage it.

“Nigeria is a country with constitutional guarantees to protect citizens of all faiths.

“Our administration is committed to working with the United States government and the international community to deepen understanding and cooperation on protection of communities of all faiths.”

KanyiDaily recalls that American rapper Nicki Minaj had expressed appreciation after President Donald Trump declared Nigeria a “country of particular concern” due to alleged religious persecution.
