Fire Destroys Three Vehicles And Power House At Oyo Filling Station

A fire outbreak destroyed three vehicles and a community power house at a filling station in the Kara area of Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State, with losses running into millions of naira.

An eyewitness said the fire started around 5 p.m on Friday after an explosion occurred in the power house, which ignited nearby flammable materials, causing the fire to spread to other properties within the area.

Investigations showed that the vehicles affected were a Volvo truck with Lagos registration number AGG 731 GB, a Golf 3 car with registration number KUT 403 AP, and an empty DAF truck with registration number GB0 14 AB.

Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Reform and Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Moroof Akinwande, said the fire was reported at about 5:21 p.m. on Friday, January 9.

“The fire incident was reported at exactly 17:21hrs on Friday, January 9, at Mr Yusuff to Oloyo Filling Station, Kara Area, Kishi, in Irepo Local Government Area of the state,” Akinwande said.

“Immediately the address was received, a crew of firefighters led by Assistant Fire Superintendent Akande E. O. promptly responded and were deployed to the scene of the incident.”

Akinwande explained that on arrival, firefighters found the power house and three vehicles already engulfed in flames.

“Upon arrival, it was a power house, a Volvo truck with registration number AGG Lagos 731 GB, a Golf 3 with registration number KUT 403 AP, and an empty DAF truck with registration number GB0 14 AB that were engulfed by fire,” he said.

According to Akinwande, the fire was quickly brought under control, preventing it from spreading to the main filling station and nearby buildings.

“No casualty was recorded. Property worth millions of naira was destroyed. The fire service was able to save the filling station, nearby buildings, and other property from imminent danger,” Akinwande said.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the fire was caused by an explosion from the power house, which set off nearby combustible materials.

Akinwande advised filling station operators and business owners across the state to take fire safety seriously and comply with safety regulations.

He also stressed the importance of keeping fire extinguishers in homes and commercial premises to help control fires before they escalate.

Akinwande urged residents to promptly report fire incidents to the agency through its emergency contact numbers.

KanyiDaily recalls that a fire outbreak recently damaged part of the Wukari Local Government Secretariat in Taraba State, destroying property estimated to be worth billions of naira.
