The Rivers State House of Assembly said it will not back down from the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, insisting that no political deal will stop it.

Rivers Assembly Insists Impeachment Of Fubara Will Proceed Despite Political Talks

KanyiDaily recalls that Lawmakers began impeachment proceedings on Thursday, accusing the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.

The Speaker of the Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, alleged that Fubara and Odu had acted in ways that endangered democracy in the state.

He also accused Fubara of intentionally failing to present the state budget as required by the constitution.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the assembly’s spokesperson, Enemi George, said the lawmakers were fully committed to completing the impeachment process.

He rejected claims that the move was driven by politics, stressing that the assembly was only carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.

“Very sincerely, I doubt that because we’ve had one too many political solutions… it demeans, diminishes the institution of the Rivers house of assembly if you say that everything that we do is because of politics. Right now, what we’re talking about is the law,” he said.

He described Fubara as a “recidivist”, someone who consistently breaks the law, saying earlier attempts to resolve issues through dialogue did not stop the alleged violations.

” A recidivist is somebody who commits the same crime over and over again… so what’s the need for a political solution?” he asked.

George also accused Fubara of mismanaging public funds and appointing family members to government positions without following due process.

On the issue of a N100,000 payment allegedly sent to lawmakers as a Christmas gift on December 30, 2025, George said the funds were rejected because there is no constitutional basis for such payments.

“Within that principle, there is no constitutional provision for that… we rejected it because I don’t want to go to prison.

“These funds do not belong to my father, mother, or sister; they belong to the people of Rivers state,” he added.

He further claimed that reconciliation efforts previously led by President Bola Tinubu failed because agreements reached during those talks were later breached.

“You can’t keep breaking the law and expecting the president to come to your rescue,” George said.

This comes after Rivers APC rejected the move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Ngozi Odu, saying such action could threaten the state’s stability.
