Super Eagles Protest Unpaid Allowances, Threaten To Boycott Algeria Match

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have reportedly refused to travel to the venue of their 2025 AFCON quarter-final match against Algeria because they have not been paid their allowances.

A team source told TheCable on Wednesday that the situation in camp has become tense.

The players are said to be unhappy that their bonuses for all four matches played so far in the tournament are still outstanding.

The Super Eagles have won all their games at the competition, scoring 12 goals in total.

The Nigerian football team topped Group C and defeated Mozambique 4–0 in the round of 16 in Fez, Morocco.

They are due to play Algeria in the quarter-final on Saturday in Marrakesh, which is about five hours from Fez.

The team was expected to travel on Thursday, but the players and officials are threatening not to move unless they are paid.

According to the insider, the players are very firm about their position and discussions are ongoing in hopes of resolving the issue.

The players are damn serious. I hope we can find a way to resolve it,” the insider told TheCable.

This is not the first time the team has taken such action.

In November 2024, the Super Eagles skipped training during the African World Cup playoffs because of unpaid allowances.

They later lost to DR Congo, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

KanyiDaily recalls that Super Eagles Coach Eric Chelle had accused DR Congo of using “voodoo” during their tense penalty shootout, which ended the Super Eagles’ bid to reach the 2026 World Cup.
