Agubuzu, who is the Eze Ogbunechendo of Ezema Olo Kingdom in Enugu State, made the call on Tuesday, February 17.
He spoke during the 2026 National Traditional and Religious Leaders Summit on Health held at the State House Abuja, which Tinubu attended as the special guest.
While speaking directly to the President during the session set aside for traditional rulers, Agubuzu said keeping Kanu in detention has continued to increase anger and unrest among young people in the South-East.
He told Tinubu that he was personally unhappy with the situation and warned that tension in the region was getting worse.
“I must tell you, Mr President, that personally, I don’t feel very happy,” he said.
The monarch said that despite talks about unity and togetherness at the summit, real peace would be hard to achieve as long as Kanu remains in custody.
According to him, the responsibility to resolve the matter now rests with the President.
He urged Tinubu to release Kanu, or if the government no longer wants him in Nigeria, to send him back to Kenya or any other country where he was previously based.
“The ball stops in your court. Bring this man out. If we don’t want him in Nigeria, return him to Kenya or London, where they took him from” he said.
Agubuzu also explained that traditional rulers in the South-East are increasingly facing hostility from young people who believe their leaders are silent on the issue.
“Some of us here are being asked to go and work, but the young people in the South-East are so agitated that they can even beat us. They see us as sellouts.
“We come to Abuja they may think we’ve come to collect money and then keep quiet. So Sir, please do something about this. Do something about this.
“We cannot make progress if we do not tell ourselves the home truth” he said
