Tony Elumelu’s Father-In-Law, Israel Ogbue Is Dead

United Bank for Africa (UBA) has confirmed that its former chairman, Israel Ogbue, has died at the age of 99.

Ogbue was the father of Awele Elumelu, chairman of Transcorp Hotels, and the father-in-law of Tony Elumelu, group chairman of UBA.

In a statement released on Thursday, the bank said he died peacefully., describing him as a respected leader in the corporate world and an experienced administrator.

Israel Ogbue became a non-executive director on UBA’s board in 2005. He was later appointed chairman in 2011 and stepped down in 2013.

According to the bank, he offered calm and principled leadership at an important time in UBA’s growth.

During his time as chairman, he strengthened the bank’s focus on good corporate governance, accountability, and long-term stability.

“Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta state, Ogbue began his career in the federal civil service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies,” the statement reads.

“He built an accomplished career that saw him rise through senior management ranks at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1988.

“His reputation for governance expertise subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA.”

The bank also described him as a committed family man who believed his long life was due to God’s grace.

He often advised young people to aim high but stay balanced and remain strong during difficult times.

UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates,” the bank said.

We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and we honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.”

UBA said the funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
