United Bank for Africa (UBA) has confirmed that its former chairman, Israel Ogbue, has died at the age of 99.

Ogbue was the father of Awele Elumelu, chairman of Transcorp Hotels, and the father-in-law of Tony Elumelu, group chairman of UBA.
In a statement released on Thursday, the bank said he died peacefully., describing him as a respected leader in the corporate world and an experienced administrator.
Israel Ogbue became a non-executive director on UBA’s board in 2005. He was later appointed chairman in 2011 and stepped down in 2013.

“His reputation for governance expertise subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA.”
The bank also described him as a committed family man who believed his long life was due to God’s grace.
He often advised young people to aim high but stay balanced and remain strong during difficult times.
“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates,” the bank said.
“We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and we honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.”
