Cross River Assembly Suspends Lawmaker Dickson Agbor Over ‘Domestic Violence’

The Cross River State House of Assembly has suspended Dickson Agbor, the lawmaker representing Obubra I State Constituency, over accusations of violent behaviour.

The decision was taken during a plenary session on Thursday after a motion was presented by Davies Etta and supported by Francis Bassey Asuquo.

Etta said the alleged behaviour was not acceptable for a member of the legislature and did not reflect the ethical standards expected from elected representatives.

He urged the Assembly to act firmly to protect the reputation of the lawmaking institution.

“We must ensure that members conduct themselves in a manner that reflects the values and responsibilities entrusted to us by the people,” Etta said.

After discussing the issue, the Assembly decided that Agbor should be suspended from legislative duties indefinitely while investigations continue.

The House also set up a special committee to look into the allegation and submit a report later for possible further action.

Following the decision, the sergeant-at-arms escorted Dickson Agbor out of the Assembly chamber.

Speaking on the matter, Speaker Elvert Ayambem said the legislature remains committed to maintaining discipline and protecting the dignity of the House.

Ayambem explained that Assembly members must act in ways that show respect for the people who elected them.

“The house will not condone any form of misconduct capable of bringing the legislature into disrepute. We must continue to uphold the dignity of this institution,” he said.

Meanwhile, Governor Bassey Otu and his wife Eyoanwan Otu criticised the alleged conduct of the lawmaker, calling it unacceptable.

In a separate statement, Glory Agbor, the lawmaker’s wife, apologised on behalf of her family and asked the public to respect their privacy.

She also announced her withdrawal from the legislators’ wives association, saying the family had resolved its internal issues.

“There is no doubt that some people have tried to paint the name of my family in a bad light, but I stand here to vehemently debunk that view against my family and state it clearly that my husband and I are at peace with each other.

“Even though issues arose, we have been able to amicably resolve our differences. As I said, this is my family, and no marriage is totally perfect. Please leave my family alone,” she said.

“I wish to use this medium to apologise to my dear husband, Hon. Ovat Agbor, and my entire family over these misconceptions against him. Please forgive me, as this will never repeat itself again.”
