Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Defence said two drones struck the embassy early Tuesday morning, and the impact caused “minor material damage” and “a small fire”.
Thick black smoke was seen rising from the diplomatic quarter, an area that hosts several foreign embassies.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion, and flames were visible shortly after. However, authorities described the damage as minor.
The embassy building was said to be empty when the attack happened, and no injuries were reported.
Security sources added that air defence systems intercepted four other drones that were also heading toward the diplomatic zone.
After the incident, the US embassy advised American citizens to stay away from the area.
The attack came shortly after the US embassy in Kuwait announced it would shut down until further notice.
The US State Department also ordered the evacuation of non-essential staff and their families from Kuwait, Bahrain, Iraq, Qatar and Jordan as a safety measure.
US President Donald Trump said the U.S would soon respond to both the embassy attack and the earlier killing of American service members.
Iran has recently launched drone and missile attacks on locations in countries that host US military facilities, saying the actions are in response to joint US-Israeli operations on its territory.
KanyiDaily recalls that on Monday, Saudi Aramco was forced to suspend operations at its Ras Tanura refinery after debris from an Iranian drone attack caused a fire at the facility.
