This comes following a poor run of form that saw Chelsea lose five straight Premier League matches without scoring for the first time since 1912.
Liam Rosenior joined the club in January on a long-term deal but managed only 11 wins in 23 matches across all competitions.
After a heavy 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion, he described the team’s display as unacceptable while facing criticism from fans.
The defeat left Chelsea in seventh place, dealing a blow to their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
In a statement on Wednesday, the club announced the sack, thanking Rosenior and his staff for their work and professionalism.
Chelsea, however, explained that recent performances did not meet expectations, making the change necessary.
Assistant coach Calum McFarlane has been appointed as interim head coach until the end of the season, with support from the existing backroom team.
The statement reads, “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with head coach Liam Rosenior.
“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to place on record our gratitude to Liam and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the club.
“Liam has always conducted himself with the highest integrity and professionalism following his appointment mid-way through the season.
“This has not been a decision the club has taken lightly, however recent results and performances have fallen below the necessary standards with still so much more to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.
“Calum McFarlane will take charge of the team as interim head coach until the end of the season with support from existing club backroom staff, as we strive to achieve European qualification and progress in the FA Cup.
“As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment.”
Reports suggest the club is considering several candidates for the permanent role, including Andoni Iraola, currently at AFC Bournemouth, Marco Silva of Fulham FC, and former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic.
Iraola has already confirmed he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season, while Silva’s contract at Fulham is set to expire in July. Terzic had also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season.
McFarlane previously stepped in as caretaker manager earlier in the campaign after Enzo Maresca was dismissed, overseeing a draw against Manchester City and a defeat to Fulham.
Rosenior recorded five wins in 13 league games and guided Chelsea to the semi-finals of the FA Cup with victories over lower-division teams.
McFarlane’s first match as interim boss will be against Leeds United at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, with a place in the FA Cup final at stake.
