Court Grants El-Rufai ₦200m Bail As Another Judge Adjourns Hearing To April 21

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted bail for former governor Nasir El-Rufai in the sum of ₦200 million over a case involving alleged money laundering and fraud.

Justice Rilwani Aikawa granted the bail on Tuesday.

Following the hearing, one of El-Rufai’s associates, Hayatudeen Lawal Makarfi, told reporters that the court set about 10 conditions that must be met before the former governor can be released.

According to him, El-Rufai will remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until all the bail terms are fulfilled.

He added that one of the conditions requires a surety who owns landed property and holds a traditional title.

Also speaking, Bello el-Rufai, son of the former Kaduna governor, said the family is relieved that bail has been granted.

However, he noted that it is not proper to discuss what happened in court with the media, adding that the judge had warned against it.

Earlier the same day, Nasir El-Rufai also appeared before the Kaduna State High Court in a separate case.

The presiding judge, Darius Khobo, adjourned a decision on his bail request in that matter until April 21, 2026.

On Monday,, the ICPC had filed an amended nine-count charge against El-Rufai at the same court, accusing him of fraud and abuse of office.

Another defendant, Amadu Sule, was removed from the updated charges.

El-Rufai has been held by the ICPC since February 19, shortly after he was released by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

He was briefly freed on March 27 on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s burial.
