Lagos Govt Asks Banks, Filling Stations To Open Toilets For Public Use

The Lagos State Government says it has deployed 1,710 public toilets across the state to help reduce open defecation.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, explained that the toilets have been placed in key locations to make them easier for residents and visitors to use.

He also called on private businesses such as filling stations, banks, and restaurants to support the effort by allowing the public to use their restrooms when possible.

Wahab said working together like this will help increase access to proper sanitation and support the state’s plan to end open defecation.

He added that the government is enforcing sanitation laws, and people who break the rules are being arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

According to him, while the government continues to build more facilities, residents and business owners also need to do their part to keep Lagos clean and healthy.

As part of our sustained efforts to eliminate open defecation and improve public sanitation across Lagos State, we currently have 1,710 functioning public toilets strategically located across the state for residents and visitors.

“However, government cannot do this alone. We are encouraging businesses such as filling stations, banks, eateries, and other public-facing facilities to make their restrooms accessible to the public where possible.

“This collaborative approach will significantly complement government efforts and expand access to sanitation facilities across the state..

“Individuals caught engaging in open defecation are being arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“These measures are necessary to protect public health, preserve dignity, and maintain a cleaner environment for all.

“While government continues to expand infrastructure, residents and businesses must also play their part in ensuring Lagos remains clean, safe, and habitable,” the statement read.
