A source who spoke with SaharaReporters appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to step in quickly, saying the road may already be showing signs of weakness after the first rainfall.
“Kindly draw the attention of His Excellency… to the newly constructed road leading to Gateway International Airport along Ilishan-Iperu Road, which was commissioned just a week ago but is already being affected by erosion due to flooding,” the source said.
To stress worries about the quality and long-term strength of the project, the source referenced a local proverb that “A road is not judged on the day it is opened, but by how well it stands after the first rain.”
The source also called on the public to help bring more attention to the issue so the government can respond without delay.
A video shared on social media showed large parts of the road covered by floodwater shortly after the rainfall.
Drivers were seen struggling to pass through the affected areas, increasing fears over the safety of road users and the road’s drainage design.
The incident has left residents and commuters worried that the road may not be able to cope with heavy seasonal rains unless urgent repairs and drainage improvements are carried out.
KanyiDaily recalls that Governor Dapo Abiodun distributed 40 brand-new SUVs to traditional rulers across Ogun state.
