The Command’s spokesperson, Bright Edafe, made this known during an appearance on The Morning Brief on Channels Television on Wednesday.
He explained that the officer, identified as Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he will face disciplinary procedures.
Edafe described the officer’s conduct as unprofessional, adding that the level of violence displayed was difficult to justify under normal circumstances.
Responding to questions about why the officer’s face was concealed in the official statement announcing his arrest, the police spokesperson said it was done in line with professional standards.
The killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi has triggered widespread anger online.
Police reports indicate that the incident happened on April 26, 2026, when officers from Area Command Effurun acted on intelligence that the victim had been caught while allegedly trying to send a package containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
The Command further stated that “the police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect”.
