Uganda Arrests 62 Nigerians, 169 Others In Fresh Crackdown On Illegal Migration

Uganda’s Ministry of Internal Affairs has arrested over 231 people suspected of staying in the country illegally, including 62 Nigerians, following two separate operations aimed at tackling irregular migration.

The arrests were made on April 27, 2026, during coordinated raids in Adjumani and parts of Kampala, specifically the Bukoto and Ntinda areas.

The operations were carried out by the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control after receiving information from members of the public.

According to the ministry’s spokesperson, Simon Peter Mundeyi, the Nigerian nationals were involved in running a church and other activities without proper work permits.

He said they are now being processed under Uganda’s immigration laws and could face penalties such as fines, deportation, or being barred from re-entering the country.

The suspects are currently being held at a government facility in Namanve.

These people come under the guise of preaching the gospel and hide behind other irregular activities.

“So acting on that intelligence, we swung into action and were able to apprehend them,” he said.

Mundeyi added that some of those arrested claimed they were brought into Uganda with false promises of jobs, while others were allegedly linked to online fraud and similar offences.

In a separate operation, 169 other foreign nationals were found in an apartment in Bukoto without valid immigration documents. Among them were 36 women.

Authorities said those arrested came from several countries, including Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Ghana, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

The ministry stressed its determination to ensure that all foreigners living or working in Uganda follow the law and have the proper documentation.

We also ask them landlords who offer accommodation facilities to these people who are clearly not Ugandans to endeavour to ask for at least the immigration status of foreign tenants before allowing them to settle in their premises,” he added.
