Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after he spent two seasons at the club.

Liverpool Sacks Arne Slot As Head Coach, To Replace Him With Andoni Iraola

The 47-year-old Dutch manager enjoyed immediate success by leading Liverpool to their 20th Premier league title in his first season.

However, the team’s performances declined in the following campaign, and they ended the English League season in fifth place.

Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola is currently the favourite to take over.

Liverpool have already made contact with the Spaniard to discuss the vacant position.

Although Liverpool secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League, they finished the league campaign with only 60 points.

It was their lowest points total since the 2015-16 season and left them 25 points behind champions Arsenal.

In a statement on Saturday, Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), praised Arne Slot’s contribution to the club.

“That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and – most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves – successful,” they said.

As such, our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater, particularly as it was underpinned by a work ethic, a diligence and a level of expertise which further underlined our view that he is a leader in his field.

“From the moment that we first encountered Arne, it was immediately clear that he is an individual who does not merely accept responsibility, he embraces it.”

The club had previously suggested that Arne Slot’s position was secure.

However, after reviewing the season following its conclusion, Liverpool’s leadership decided that the team needed a new direction.

They believe a more aggressive and attack-minded style of football is required moving forward.

The decision was made by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Andoni Iraola, 43, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising coaches.

He has built a strong reputation for attractive attacking football. Hughes worked with him at Bournemouth before moving to Liverpool in 2024.

Bournemouth enjoyed an impressive season under Iraola, finishing just one place and three points behind Liverpool and earning a place in next season’s Europa League.

Slot arrived at Liverpool in 2024 to replace Jurgen Klopp, who stepped down after nine years in charge.

Earlier in the month, Mohamed Salah expressed his belief that Liverpool needed to return to a fast-paced attacking style that intimidates opponents.

He made the comments after the team’s disappointing defeat against Aston Villa.

That approach was a key part of Liverpool’s success during Klopp’s era, when the club won every major trophy available.

FSG stated that changing the head coach was not a criticism of Slot’s abilities, but they felt that a fresh approach was necessary to improve the team’s future prospects.

The club also thanked him for his achievements and said he and his family would always be welcome at Anfield.

The conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach,” the statement added.

Arne leaves with our gratitude, with a Premier League title to his name, and with the knowledge that he and his family will always be welcomed back at Anfield.”

Slot’s coaching staff are also expected to leave, although Liverpool have not officially confirmed their futures.

Last summer, Liverpool spent £415 million on six new players in an attempt to defend their title.

The club broke the British transfer record by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for £125 million and also paid a club-record £116 million for German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen.

The season was also marked by tragedy when forward Diogo Jota died in a car accident in July. Jota had been an important player during Slot’s time at the club.

In their farewell message, Liverpool thanked Slot for guiding the club to its 20th league championship and praised the leadership he showed both on and off the pitch.

We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title,” the statement added.

That accomplishment – made all the more remarkable as it arrived in his very first season in charge – was built on outstanding coaching and leadership every single day.

“He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo. The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person.

“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.”
