2027: Peter Obi Told Me He’s More Popular Than Atiku – Dele Momodu [Video]

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, claims that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi once turned down his advice to team up politically with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Peter Obi previously served as Atiku’s running mate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 presidential election.

Ahead of the 2023 election, Obi left the PDP for the Labour Party, where he ran for president and finished behind Atiku and President Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In 2025, Obi joined forces with Atiku and several opposition figures, including Rabiu Kwankwaso and Rotimi Amaechi, in the ADC.

However, both Obi and Kwankwaso later moved to the NDC, citing disagreements and internal problems within the opposition alliance.

Speaking on Symfoni TV on Monday, Momodu recalled advising Obi to consider working closely with Atiku and pointed to political examples from Ghana and the United States to support his argument.

He revealed that the former Anambra state governor turned down his request, arguing that he was more popular than Atiku.

Peter is the only politician who has visited my home in London, Ghana and Lagos,” Momodu said.

“In one of the visits, I told Peter, ‘Try and work with Atiku.’ I gave him copious examples that if Mahama was not a vice president to Atta Mills, maybe he would never have become President of Ghana because he came from the minority, just like Jonathan of Nigeria.

“I gave him the example of America, where even though Biden was much older than Obama, he still came back to become President because he was able to demonstrate his capacity.

“You have only been a governor of a state, but Peter told me that he’s more popular than Atiku. I swear to God. If you see him, ask him if I lied against him.”

With preparations for the 2027 elections underway, both Atiku and Obi have emerged as presidential candidates for different political parties.

KanyiDaily recalls that Dele Momodu said that President Bola Tinubu is responsible for pushing Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to align for the 2027 elections.
