According to witnesses, the incident occurred on Friday, June 12, 2026, when police officers moved to disperse demonstrators protesting against insecurity, economic difficulties, and governance issues in the country.
The protest drew activists and members of civil society organisations who had gathered to voice their concerns.
However, the situation escalated when security operatives reportedly fired tear gas in an effort to break up the crowd.
As tear gas spread across the protest venue, participants rushed to leave the area, and Sowore was said to have been affected by the fumes and later lost consciousness.
Fellow protesters and supporters quickly came to his assistance and removed him from the scene.
Sources said he regained consciousness while being transported away from the protest ground. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for medical attention and further evaluation.
KanyiDaily recalls that a human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, and his son, rapper Falz, also joined protesters in Lagos on Friday to speak out against insecurity in the country.
