The Abia State Government has dismissed reports that it plans to stop commercial tricycle operations, popularly known as Keke, across the state.

Abia Government Denies Plans To Ban Keke Operations

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, made this known while speaking with journalists at the Government House in Umuahia after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu said there was no reason for the government to ban tricycles, stressing that the administration would only consider such a move if there was a strong justification.

The government is not going to be stampeded into banning Keke operations when there is no compelling need to do so,” he said.

He said the government was working on ways to better organise and regulate public transportation in the state.

According to him, the administration wants to improve the way commercial vehicles and tricycles operate to make movement easier and help tackle traffic congestion, especially in major cities.

Kanu also noted that the number of Keke operators in Abia has risen because some neighbouring states have introduced restrictions on their activities.

Despite the increase in operators, he maintained that the Abia government has no plan to ban commercial tricycles.

He said the focus remains on regulating the sector and improving transportation rather than shutting down Keke operations.
