The team made up of Favour Ashe, Jennifer Obi, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Omokwe ran a time of 40.24 seconds on Saturday during the heats in Gaborone, Botswana.

Although they finished fourth in their race, the Nigerian quartet still qualified for the final after securing one of the available non-automatic qualifying spots.

This result also earned them a place in the mixed 4×100m event at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

The final of the event is scheduled for Sunday at 4:05 pm Nigerian time.

However, it was not a successful outing for Nigeria in other relay events.

The men’s 4×100m team placed fifth, while the women’s team failed to finish after a mistake during a baton exchange.

The women’s squad was also affected by last-minute withdrawals from several key runners.

In the 4×400m races, Nigeria finished third in the mixed category, while both the men’s and women’s teams ended in sixth place in their heats.

Despite the mixed results, Nigeria still has another chance to qualify for the World Championships through the repechage rounds on Sunday.
