Court Remands Omoyele Sowore In Kuje Prison After Judge Ordered His Arrest

The order was given on Monday by Justice Mohammed Umar, who said Sowore should remain in custody until the court hears and decides on his application seeking to halt the enforcement of the order that revoked his bail and issued a warrant for his arrest.

The judge also rejected an earlier request by Sowore asking him to step away from the case over allegations of bias.

After delivering the ruling, Justice Umar adjourned the case until June 24 to hear the application for a stay of execution.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the application was filed by Sowore’s new lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

Omoyele Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court earlier in the day alongside supporters carrying placards.

The court had previously revoked his bail on June 16 after he failed to appear for his trial.

Following an oral application by the lawyer representing the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde, SAN, Justice Umar also issued a bench warrant for Sowore’s arrest.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false claims about President Bola Tinubu by describing him as “a criminal” in posts shared on his X account and Facebook page.
