Garba Shehu Reveals Why Buhari Still Keeps Service Chiefs Despite Calls For Their Sack

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Muhammadu Buhari, has revealed why his principal shunned those calling for the sack of service chiefs due to the spate of insecurity in Nigeria.

KanyiDaily recalls that many Nigerians including the Senate had asked President Buhari to sack the current Service Chiefs and replace them with new ones with fresh ideas and solutions on how to tackle the growing insecurity in the country.

The call is coming following the gruesome murder of about 43 rice farmers by Boko Haram terrorists at Zabarmari in the Jere Local Government Area of Borno State last Saturday.

Speaking during an interview with Arise TV, Garba Shehu said President Buhari would never sack the service chiefs so long as he remained satisfied with them.

Shehu, who described the call as ‘out of place’, said the decision to sack or retain any of the service chiefs is entirely the president’s.

“I am not aware that the tenure of service chiefs is subjected to any law or regulation that is clearly stated. They serve at the pleasure of the president and (if) the president is satisfied with their performance, he keeps them. The buck stops on his table —with due respect to the feelings of Nigerians.

“The clamour for the sack is out of place considering that the president is not subject to the opinion of opposition political party which has clamoured for this all the time. It is entirely his own determination; he decides who he keeps as his service chiefs and for how long.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Garba Shehu blamed the 43 slain farmers for their misfortune, saying they should have received military clearance before heading to the rice fields.
