Nigerians Reacts As Senate Considers Proposal To Introduce Sharia Law In South-West

The Nigerian Senate has received a proposal from a group known as The Muslim Congress {TMC) to introduce and implement Sharia law in the South-West.

The Senate received the proposal at a zonal public hearing of the ongoing constitutional amendments in Lagos on Wednesday, according to SaharaReporters.

The hearings organised by the Senate across all geo-political zones of the country is aimed at getting suggestions from the public so it can review and amend the 1999 Constitution where necessary.

Speaking at the hearing, the TMC representative Abdulganiyu Bamidele said they wants Sharia implemented in the Yoruba-speaking southwest to cater to its Muslim population.

“We want to partner for the creation of Sharia courts in the South-West because of our population of Muslims,” Bamidele added.

The call has since generated so much backlash on the social media with many Nigerians vowing to vehemently resist it if ever implemented in the South-West.

Below are some of the Twitter reactions:

KanyiDaily recalls that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko-Muhammad had also advocated that Sharia law should be taught in Nigerian universities.
