Lekki Tollgate Should Be Free, We Paid With Our Blood – Alex Ekubo

Nollywood actor, Alex Ekubo on Thursday, asked the government to make the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State, free forever.

Alex Ekubo Wants Govt To Make Lekki Tollgate Free

Ekubo stated this in commemoration of the second anniversary of the Endsars protest which claimed lives on the 20th of October, 2020 at the toll.

Security operatives, in October 2020 reportedly opened fire at unarmed protesters at the tollgate, which sparked uproar and reactions across the country and parts of the world.

Subsequently, a panel named “The Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses” otherwise referred to as the EndSARS panel was instituted and led by Justice Doris Okuwobi

On November 15, 2021, the panel submitted its report to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu

In the report, the panel submitted that at least nine persons were confirmed dead at the Lekki toll gate, when soldiers stormed the tollgate to disperse EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.

The government announced in March this year that the Lekki Concession Company (LCC) in charge of the tollgate would resume tolling activities by April.

The plan by the government was, however, rejected by the front liners of the protest.

To mark the second anniversary of the incident, Ekubo took to his Instagram handle on Thursday morning and said the tollgate should be renamed “Lekki Memorial Way”.

He also said it should remain free forever because Nigerians paid in full with their blood.

The actor also sent a message to the government, saying that “20-10-20” will never be forgotten.

He wrote, “Dear Nigerian Government, we will NEVER forget this day. 20 – 10 – 20. We will return the favour. The Labour of our heroes’ past shall never be in vain. I still maintain Lekki Toll plaza should be renamed Lekki Memorial Way & remain toll free forever.
We paid in full with our blood.”

Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily reported that SERAP had demanded the prosecution of officers who shot EndSARS protesters at the Lekki tollgate.
