The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) says it on Wednesday, arrested a woman, Omoseyin Oluwadarasimi Esther, with the Twitter handle of Lala, offering new naira notes for sale on social media.
The ICPC said in a statement that the arrest was a result of intelligence received which led the ICPC operatives to seek out and promptly arrest the suspect.
According to ICPC, it is believed the suspect is in collusion with key elements in the financial services sector diverting the newly released notes away from banking halls and payment channels into a “black market”
Part of the statement reads, “She is currently in ICPC detention and is helping the commission with its findings on the criminal trading of the naira and the attendant scarcity and negative economic outcomes being caused by the action.”
Recall that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has continuously claimed that it has released sufficient new Naira notes to commercial banks across the country.
However, commercial banks have maintained that they do not have adequate new notes to issue to their customers, hence, many banks across the country have completely stopped issuing money to their customers with a few of them issuing a maximum of N10,000 or N5,000.
Meanwhile, Kanyi Daily reported that a woman stripped naked inside a bank in Lagos to express her frustration over the scarcity of Naira notes.
