KanyiDaily recalls that the Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Hudu Yunusa on Sunday morning declared Binani as winner of the supplementary election held Saturday.
Yunusa had walked into the collation centre after the supplementary election was suspended on Saturday and announced Binani as the winner of the election.
According to him, Binani defeated the incumbent Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to become the first elected female governor in Nigeria’s history.
However, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reversed the declaration which saw the REC making the announcement instead of the Returning Officer.
The INEC explained that the action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer, adding that the “collation of results of the supplementary election is hereby suspended.”
Despite the cancelation of her ‘illegal’ declaration which has triggared controversy, Binani delivered her acceptance speech as Adamawa Governor-Elect.
In the speech, she thanked President Muhammadu Buhari for “making history” by ensuring the first elected female governor emerged during his administration.
She said, “President Muhammadu Buhari, you have made history in electing the first female governor in our country Nigeria.
“This would no doubt broaden political participation by encouraging our daughters, sisters, aunties, mothers, and indeed the girl child” to take active part in politics.”
KanyiDaily recalls that the INEC had also declared Senator Ibrahim Bomai of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of the Yobe south senatorial election.
