During a recent interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in New York, Burna Boy openly expressed his views on the substance of Afrobeats.
The singer emphasized that Afrobeats often lacks depth and substance, characterizing it as a genre primarily centered around creating a lively and enjoyable atmosphere.
Burna Boy pointed out that many African artists lack genuine life experiences, which, in his opinion, contributes to the shallowness of the Afrobeats genre.
He claimed that a significant portion of Nigerian and African music, or what is commonly referred to as Afrobeats, tends to lack meaningful content and fails to address substantial themes.
“Not even experience because 90 percent of them have no real life experiences that they can understand which is why you hear most of Nigerian Music or I will say African Music, I don’t even know what to say, Afrobeats that’s what you people call it is mostly about nothing, literally nothing, there is no substance to it, like nobody is talking about anything, it’s just a great time, just an amazing time,” Burna Boy said.
KanyiDaily recalls that Burna Boy also expressed his belief that the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti, would face criticism and calls for his arrest if he lived in the present generation
