American actress, Jada Pinkett Smith has revealed that the late legendary rapper Tupac Shakur proposed to her during his time in jail, an offer she ultimately declined.

In a preview of Showtime’s All the Smoke podcast, the 52-year-old actress shared insights into Tupac’s proposal while he was serving time for sexual abuse in 1995.

During the interview, Jada Pinkett also revealed the challenges she faced in addressing their relationship in her upcoming book, “Worthy.”

She told the hosts Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson about the time Tupac asked for her hand in marriage while he was serving time behind bars at Rikers Island in 1995.

“I talk about this in the book, when I go to see him in Rikers. When I wrote about that in the book and when I had to talk about it, speak my words for the audible version of the book, that was probably one of the more painful parts,” Pinkett Smith explained.

“Seeing him there, the condition that he was in and having to leave him there, he was in bad shape,” she continued.

The actress explained that Tupac’s proposal was likely driven by his need for someone to endure the tough times with him.

“And so, when he asked me to get married, he was at Rikers and I knew at that time that he needed somebody to do time with him, which I was gonna do anyway.”

Despite her commitment to being there for him, she emphasized that marriage wasn’t necessary, stating, “He didn’t have to marry me to do that. I’m here. He needed a rock. Because of our friendship and everything we had been through together, he just wanted to feel that solidified foundation.”

Reflecting on a letter Tupac wrote her, she attributed his mindset at the time to a noticeable shift in his behavior even before his incarceration.

“I promise you, he would’ve married me and divorced me as soon as his ass got out,” she added. “He would’ve! […] I just think it was the mind state that he was in. He wrote me this long letter, and even before ‘Pac went to jail, he was starting to shift in a certain manner. Good, really good.”

Jada Pinkett and Tupac became friends as teenagers in Baltimore. The proposal took place in 1995, the same year she started a relationship with her now former husband, Will Smith.

In the podcast, Pinkett Smith also spoke about a year-long silence between her and Tupac due to a heated argument, expressing regret for wasting time over pride.

“I was hurt, I was pissed, and I really kinda dug my heels in the ground,” she explained. “I was just like, ‘He went too far and he’s gon’ have to call me, and I’m standing my ground on it.’ And I learned that, don’t waste time like that. It’s like, a whole year out of my pride. Both of us. Very prideful. Just hard-headed, prideful. ‘Cause none of it mattered.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Jada Pinkett recently revealed that she and her husband, Will Smith, have separated and have been living apart since 2016.
