The Federal Government announced that the implementation of the new minimum wage would commence from May 1, 2024.

Workers Day: FG Confirms New Minimum Wage Will Take Effect From May 1, 2024

The Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, made this announcement during the Workers’ May Day celebration at Eagle Square in Abuja on Wednesday.

She clarified that despite ongoing negotiations by the Tripartite Committee tasked with determining the new wage, the implementation would proceed.

Onyejeocha assured workers that consultations are underway to expedite the finalization of the new minimum wage document.

President Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, praised Nigerian workers for their contributions to national development at the same event.

He affirmed the government’s willingness to consider the committee’s recommendations regarding the new national minimum wage.

Tinubu also reiterated the administration’s commitment to Nigeria’s progress through its reform agenda.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had previously advocated for an increase in the minimum wage to N615,000, citing the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage in April, five years after its enactment in 2019.

They emphasized the urgency of reviewing the wage due to the prevailing economic conditions in the country.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase ranging from 25% to 35% for civil servants under the remaining six consolidated salary structures.
