Former US First Lady, Michelle Obama Loses Her Mother, Marian Robinson At 86

Marian Robinson, the mother of former United States First Lady Michelle Obama, passed away on Friday at the age of 86.

Michelle Obama shared a heartfelt message on X, revealing that her mother was always a constant source of support for the entire family.

The family praised Marian’s wisdom, describing it as seemingly innate, but emphasized that it was actually gained through years of experience and a deep understanding that life’s toughest challenges could be faced with grace.

Marian Lois Shields, born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, worked as a teacher and secretary. She married Fraiser Robinson in 1960, and they had two children: Craig in 1962 and Michelle in 1964.

In a 2022 interview on “Good Morning America” with Robin Roberts, Michelle and Marian talked about their unbreakable bond and the strength they drew from each other.

The family noted that Marian was very supportive of Michelle’s decision to marry Barack Obama, even though his political career brought many challenges.

“At every step, as our families went down paths none of us could have predicted, she remained our refuge from the storm, keeping our feet on solid ground.

“On Election Night in 2008, when the news broke that Barack would soon shoulder the weight of the world, she was there, holding his hand,” the family said.

Robinson is survived by both her children, their spouses and six grandchildren.

“She passed peacefully this morning, and right now, none of us are quite sure how exactly we’ll move on without her,” the statement added.
