The Nigeria Police Force has moved to withdraw the defamation case filed by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun against Lagos-based lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi.
A notice of discontinuance, dated January 29, was filed under Section 108 (1)(2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.
The document seeks to terminate the case against Dele Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.
Signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, the notice states that the police will request the court to strike out the charges.
This decision follows the intervention of influential Nigerians and the request of the nominal complainant, Are Afe Babalola, to drop the case.
As of the time of filing this report, both parties are present in court, and the prosecution has served the notice to the defense counsel.
However, the judge has yet to sit to formally dismiss the charges.
