Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who officially began his tenure as governor on Monday, also granted pardons to 43 convicts and ordered the release of eight inmates.
He had been serving as acting governor since December 27, 2023, following the death of his predecessor, Rotimi Akeredolu.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan, it was revealed that the decision was part of a broader effort to show compassion and promote rehabilitation.
The decision follows the recommendations of the state advisory council on the prerogative of mercy, led by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Olukayode Ajulo.
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasized that the move reflects his administration’s commitment to justice, second chances, and rehabilitation, stressing the importance of a legal system that upholds both fairness and humanity.
“As part of this initiative, the Governor has ordered the outright release of 8 individuals who were previously incarcerated,” the statement reads.
“Additionally, 15 condemned inmates who were sentenced to death by hanging have had their sentences commuted to various prison terms, while 20 other convicts serving life imprisonment have also had their sentences adjusted to more lenient terms.”
Adeniyan said the pardon follows the recommendations of the state advisory council on the prerogative of mercy, chaired by Olukayode Ajulo, the state’s attorney-general and commissioner for Justice.
“This decision is a testament to Governor Aiyedatiwa’s belief in second chances and the potential for rehabilitation. It is His Excellency’s responsibility to ensure that our justice system reflects mercy and humanity.
The statement also highlighted that this initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts “to address issues within the penal system and to promote the reintegration of individuals into society as productive members”.
KanyiDaily had earlier reported that Lucky Aiyedatiwa was sworn in as Ondo governor, securing his first full four-year term after stepping in to lead the state following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu in 2023.
